Rabbi Barry was a speaker at the Martin Luther King breakfast where he wore his shirt with the Haitian and Israeli flag to show his support for the Haitian people in their hour of need, as many face deportation from America. Our synagogue also hosted Haitian leaders at our Shabbat service who shared the plight of the Haitians and were welcomed with open arms by our congregants and friends. On both occasions, Rabbi Silver, whose father performed the first Bar Mitzvah in Haiti, recalled the words on the Haitian flag, “L’union fait la force” which means “Strength in Unity”. The evening and the breakfast were beautiful opportunities to unite our nation behind Martin Luther King’s dream and his prophetic words, “We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will perish together as fools. We are tied together in a single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.” All are welcome to celebrate this call for unity which we celebrate every Shabbat with the Shema, and throughout the year with our calls for peace.
